“Nong Thung Thong Wetland” has been ranked as a wetland of international importance.
(Wetlands of International Importance site) 1 of 69 in Thailand
“Nong Thung Thong wetland area” is located on the banks of the Tapi River. The area
consists of swamps, marshes, peat swamps, and shrub forests. There are large freshwater
marshes, and Nong Thung Thong is the largest marsh, located on the eastern bank of the
river and covers an area of 2,500 rai. During the rainy season (October – December), it
receives water that overflows from the Tapi River. In the dry season, the water level
decreases and is stored only in the marshes. This makes this area a habitat for various types
of wildlife and plants. As a result, this area was designated as the “Nong Thung Thong
Wildlife Sanctuary” by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives on September 25, 1975.
The area was designated to cover neighboring areas, namely, Khao Tok Subdistrict, Khian
Sa Subdistrict, Aran Kham Wari Subdistrict and Tha Chi Subdistrict, Ban Na San District,
Surat Thani Province on August 3, 1988. Currently, threats to the Nong Thung Thong wetland
area include land development for agriculture, fishing with inappropriate tools, burning
bushes in the dry season, hunting wildlife, illegal digging for rare plants, and chemical
problems from agricultural areas.
The project has initiated the project since October 1, 2021 until now by operating in the target villages around the wetlands of Nong Thung Thong Wildlife Sanctuary, totaling 10 villages and 3 target schools to improve the quality of life of the community, strengthen water management, and livelihood of the community in the project area by restoring and conserving important habitats of fish and aquatic resources, including the use of natural resources in wetlands and biodiversity in a valuable and sustainable manner, focusing on the participation of the community and relevant sectors in the area.
Past project implementations have been carried out in line with the project objectives, through workshops to introduce the project to the Protected Area Committee and stakeholders, as well as baseline data collection and participatory surveys with local communities, stakeholders and schools for planning and problem analysis within the area.
The project also supports the designation of fish and aquatic animal conservation zones,
community forest management, and the support of sustainable agriculture, such as compost
production, as well as activities that build income-generating opportunities for the community. In
addition, there are activities aimed at raising awareness in schools, such as setting up
information centers, exhibitions, and other initiatives to disseminate knowledge related to
biodiversity, as well as the value and importance of the Nong Thung Thong wetland.
Furthermore, the project emphasizes promoting and proposing the registration of the Nong
Thung Thong wetland as a Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar Site) to conserve,
prevent loss, and stop the deterioration of the wetland, as well as reduce conflicts over wetland
use between countries.
