“The Lower Prachin Buri River Basin” is located in the eastern part of Thailand. It is an important tributary of the Bang Pakong River Basin. It covers 3 provinces and 10 districts of Prachin Buri, Nakhon Nayok, and Chachoengsao. The basin area is approximately 2,190 sq.km., accounting for 10 percent of the Bang Pakong River Basin. The Prachin Buri River is the main river that is important to the local communities that use the Prachin Buri River for agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture, consumption, industrial plants, etc. It is also an important water source in terms of the ecosystem. The diversity of fish species, aquatic animals, and various living things that are beneficial to life, create jobs, and generate income for the community.
In the first year, the project began its operations in Bang Taen Subdistrict, Ban Sang District, Prachinburi Province, covering 13 target villages. In the second and third years, the project expanded its activities to five districts: Ban Sang, Mueang Prachinburi, Si Mahosot, Prachantakham, and Si Maha Phot within the lower Prachinburi River basin. Through its work in the area, the project identified several issues, including a lack of participation, integration, allocation, and water management among the government, private sector, and agricultural water users. These issues led to inefficiencies in water use, along with the deterioration of the irrigation canal system in agricultural areas, resulting in inefficiencies and water loss. Additionally, there were problems with ecological degradation, a decline in the number of aquatic animals in the lower Prachinburi River, insufficient income sources for local communities, and challenges related to water availability, drought, water quality, wastewater, and saltwater intrusion.
The project acknowledges the significance of improving the water canal system to enhance water flow into agricultural areas, while strengthening participatory water management networks. This is achieved by organizing seminars for stakeholders and relevant parties to collaborate, exchange ideas, and jointly take action to ensure the benefits are shared and the results are monitored. This collaborative effort aims to allocate water effectively and build community resilience. Additionally, the project promotes environmentally friendly integrated farming practices, supports the restoration of aquatic resources by establishing a conservation zone for aquatic species in the lower Prachinburi River Basin, and provides materials and equipment. The project also strengthens long-term mechanisms for managing aquatic resources in the area to restore ecosystems and improve the quality of life for local communities.
